I felt I was too heavy. At 240 being 5’11, I was putting a lot of muscle on my frame and I didn’t feel healthy. And if you think about it for a second, your organs don’t grow with your muscles.
So as you become bigger, your heart, liver, and other organs must deal with the consequences of carrying more weight and having to process more food. Also, if you’re too big, you’ll likely have mobility issues and just overall trouble moving around easily.
My Long Term Goal
Listen, I’m all about longevity. And not really just about longevity but about quality of life as well. I’m not trying to have a great body to impress people—that’s of no use to me. I want to be healthy because I don’t just want to be there for my kids as they grow up.
I ain’t wanna be one of those dads out there yelling, “run, son, run!” I wanna race with them! And for that, Imma have to be fit, healthy and have great mobility. That’s why I decided to change my diet and habits.
Doing what I was doing, I was not putting myself in a situation where my body could run efficiently for many years to come. So I decided to change and cut some foods, only eat once a day, start eating lots of fruits and veggies, and now I’m feeling better.
I’m not prescribing this. You guys can go to Google and come to your own conclusions. You’ll see that many people will tell you that eating once a day isn’t healthy. But it is working for me, and it is what I’ve been doing, and I’m feeling great.
Why Eat Once A Day?
Mainly for health reasons. When you eat, your body must produce certain toxins to be able to process the food. So when you eat constantly, your body is always producing those toxins. Also, every time you eat, your body produces inflammation, and that leads to other problems.
By eating only once a day, I’m actually giving my body enough time (it needs 9-11 hours) to reset and even get a rest from having to be continually working processing food.
Most people, who eat several times a day, don’t even realize it, but they are adding food to their bodies as their bodies are still processing food they ate in the past.
And even worse, with foods such as red meat, which take a really long time to process, some people end up with food in their system for 5 days or so—that can’t be healthy for anyone! That’s like running an engine and never stopping it to give it a break.
I’m also eating only once a day for discipline. Around 2014 I lost a lot of discipline with my eating. I was taking advantage of the fact that I’ve got relatively good genetics. So I was finishing my kids’ pizza and eating a ton of junk food, which obviously wasn’t good for me.
Before, I was able to metabolize all that stuff. But even with great genetics, my metabolism slowed down because father time is catching up, and I started feeling foggy and running low on energy.
What I eat and how I eat it
Look, so I eat once a day, and I try to make it a big meal with lots of greens and protein. In the video, I show you exactly what I eat. I start with some broccoli, asparagus, green onions, brussel sprouts, jalapenos for taste, and cauliflower. I add some sea salt and place them on a tray and put them in the oven for a few minutes.
While the vegetables are in the oven, I cook my protein or make a protein shake. In the video, I’m making a protein shake. But if one day I get a shake for my protein the next day, I’ll eat some real shit for sure.
When I do, my favorite is salmon. It’s packed with vitamins and nutrients, and it has great flavor, and I love the texture. Personally, I avoid red meat because they are highly inflammatory, and it takes your body way more time to process it.
Losing mass with plant-based food
I’m ok with losing some mass. You know, I’ve been working out and lifting all my life. I actually started when I was about 12 or 13 years old. That’s a long time!
Basically, my whole body is muscle, and I don’t want to get to the point where I’m just lifting hard and losing track of the way I look. That happens to many guys, and, to them, they look normal, but to other people, they stop looking human. I actually want to have a neck!
If I lose a few pounds of muscle, that’s ok with me. But with that said, there’s research that shows that you can actually gain muscle on a plant-based diet. The reasoning behind it is that all protein actually comes from plants.
When we eat protein from animals, we’re merely eating recycled protein that the animal got from eating plants. It’s an interesting take. You can learn about it by watching a Netflix documentary called Game Changers.
What I Put In Protein Shake
In the video, I’m making an Alpha Vegan protein shake. It’s a plant-based protein shake that actually tastes good. You know, usually, plant-based proteins taste like dirt because they are natural. I’m alright with that taste, but most people aren’t. But anyway, this one, this one tastes pretty fucking good.
When I take it, I add 2 scoops of protein and 2 scoops of peanut butter and that shit tastes great! That adds up to about 50 grams of protein, which is plenty. It also has enzymes, glutamine, and other good stuff. That said, I still get my protein from Salmon or other real stuff whenever I can.
